Initial consultation
During your initial consultation Sally will look at all aspects of your health and life, emotions, environment and relationships in addition to your reason for seeking treatment. She will aim to support and/or educate you regarding the things you can do to help yourself, such as your diet, lifestyle and outlook.
How many treatments will I need ?
Everyone is different but generally speaking an initial weekly course of six treatments is recommended. For some people there is a marked improvement in this time, for others it takes longer. In acute cases you may be asked to come in twice in a week. As symptoms improve and you start to feel better treatments are spaced further apart, maybe fortnightly or monthly. For chronic conditions some people choose monthly maintenance treatments.
Your first treatment
What will happen
Before your treatment begins I will take a look at your tongue noting its shape, colour and coating and take your pulse on both wrists noting the quality, strength, rhythm and speed. The tongue and pulse give a clear picture of the energetic state of the internal organs and vital substances of your body. Care will be taken examining any areas of pain, tension or weakness before and/or during your treatment.
My aim is to weave together all the information gathered, including that from your initial consultation, and make a diagnosis based on the principles of Chinese medicine. Your treatment plan will be something we work out together; it will reflect your individual needs and specific circumstances and will include supporting you regarding the things you can do to help yourself.
What to wear
Loose trousers or a skirt and a comfy top with sleeves allow easy access to the most commonly used points on the lower legs, arms, abdomen, chest and back. It is also ideal for therapeutic massage which is usually given over light clothing. There are acupuncture points all over the body so in some cases you will need to undress to your underwear.
Should I eat before treatment?
Yes – something light and avoid anything alcoholic.
Will acupuncture hurt?
Usually there is no pain when the needles are inserted. Sometimes there is a slight pricking, tingling or aching, these sensations are usually very brief and once the needles are in place most people feel very relaxed.
Other techniques and treatments
Alongside acupuncture Sally uses other traditional Chinese medicine techniques where appropriate.
Massage (tui na, acupressure, shiatsu) – Important points that are sometimes too sensitive to be stimulated with the needle can be activated with various of hands-on techniques including stretching, rolling, shaking, grasping and vibrating. Each have particular therapeutic effects which may be vigorous, moving, gentle or nourishing depending on what is needed. Sometimes referred to as acupuncture without needles, this hands-on work can be an effective alternative to acupuncture for people who are fearful of needles.
Moxa or Moxibustion – Using the herb mugwort (artemisia vulgaris), which has been dried and shaped into a stick or cone, is lit above a chosen point. This allows warmth the and the healing properties of the herb to travel into the body.
Cupping – Vacuum sealed glass cups can be used to stimulate points, activate channels and clear stagnation. The vacuum is created by placing a flame inside the cup which is placed on the skin creating a pleasant sucking sensation.
A few of my Reviews
Had four acupuncture sessions with Sally over the course of about a month and a half. I’d been having jaw pain and migraines, and the treatment has really helped. The jaw pain has nearly gone, and I am much more able to control the migraines from getting too bad. Part of it is actually the advice that Sally gives about lifestyle and forms of meditation. She’s really lovely and such a calming person, would highly recommend!
Hannah Ide
Sally is amazing. It’s so much more than an acupuncture session. She is incredibly kind and caring and that comes through in everything she does. She takes time to gently find out what is happening for you and how you are feeling at the beginning of each session—and carefully considers the best treatment each time. She has a way of making you feel safe and deeply relaxed. Sally has helped me a huge amount with back pain, stress, anxiety and I’ve learned so much about myself through our sessions.
Sarah Collinson
I went to see her with persistent migraines and over the course of a few sessions, she was able to treat me and my discomfort very holistically and get me back to a good place again. She’s also great at providing additional information that is interesting and informative, and she really helped me to look at my life and lifestyle overall and make positive changes outside of the clinic too. She helped hugely with my period pain and managing that too.
